Interesting theological discussion about the story of Ibrahim alaihis salam and how different groups interpret his story differently, by Yasir Qadhi. Starts with the explanation of the view of the people of kalam (ie philosophers :D) then followed by the view of the people of hadith (ahl’ hadith)

The correct understanding, wallahu Alem, is that Ibrahim alaihis salam, did not intend to worship the son or the moon, and he did not mean in his heart that they were real gods, rather that this was a form of debate with his people to show them the futility of their belief.

This is the opinion of Ibn Taymiyyah and the people of Hadith.
